Ring is fine for basic stuff but if you want more serious monitoring and sensors for doors/windows, SimpliSafe might be better. It's built more like a traditional alarm system but still DIY.

Can I use SimpliSafe without paying for the monthly monitoring? Just for local alarms or something?

You can, yeah. The system will still blare an alarm if triggered, but it won't call the police or anything. You just won't get the professional monitoring services.

Yep, it works as a local alarm system without a subscription. You'll hear the siren if something happens, but you'd have to call emergency services yourself. To get the app features and monitoring, you need a plan.

Returns were super easy for me. I think you get 60 days or something? Just box it up and send it back. No fuss.

Yeah, it's a pretty good policy. I had to return a sensor that I didn't end up needing and they processed the refund quick. Just make sure you initiate it within their window, I think it's 60 days from when you get it.

I got a refurbished keypad and it's been totally fine, no issues at all. I figure it's just equipment, so refurbished should be okay.

Refurbished can be a great way to save. SimpliSafe usually has a good process for them, checking everything. As long as it comes with a warranty, I'd say go for it.

Does SimpliSafe really work without Wi-Fi? My internet can be spotty sometimes and I'm worried about gaps in coverage.

It mostly uses cellular for the monitoring stuff, so even if your Wi-Fi dies, the alarms still communicate with their monitoring center. Cameras obviously need Wi-Fi though for recording.

The base station has a cellular connection for communicating with the monitoring service. So, for actual alarm events, you're usually good without Wi-Fi. Just the cameras and smart home integrations would be affected if your internet goes out.

I like mine for the convenience of not carrying keys and being able to check if the door's locked from the app. It's not the absolute fastest smart lock out there, but it gets the job done and works smoothly with SimpliSafe.
